Swingtown, Vol 1

covers of A Swingtown Fan Zine

Hey, Swingsters!

When I started this project, I imagined writing one mini zine per episode. It worked for the first few but Episode 5 was a turning point. I realized I had a lot more to say and I needed more space than a mini zine could provide. I decided to change formats. Major, I know. After some experimentation and inspo from the zine world, I decided on a 24 page quarter-size zine that will cover 3 to 4 episodes. This works out a lot better for me and I’m stoked to be learning a new way to print zines.

Going forward, Volume 1 will include episodes 1 - 4. I can’t remember if I made any changes. I think I just cut and paste the original text into the new format. Apologies if that’s not the case.

To recap, this is my first attempt at a fan zine and it’s for the 2008 TV show Swingtown. It was cancelled after just one season so you may not remember it and that’s ok! That’s why I’m recapping the episodes!

Swingtown was created by Michael Kelley, an American writer and producer that worked on The O.C. and Providence. The show aired on CBS for one single, magical season in 2008. It starred Molly Parker and Jack Davenport as a married couple with children living in the Chicago suburbs in the summer of 1976. Their characters, Bruce and Susan, are approaching a time in their lives where, after marrying young and starting a family, their children are self-sufficient and they finally have a moment for some self-reflection. Are they satisfied with their lives? Or, is there something missing? Let’s find out!

Episode 1: Pilot We are introduced to our three primary couples.

Episode 2: Love Will Find A Way Janet struggles with sharing.

Episode 3: Double Exposure Susan and Bruce host a housewarming party.

Episode 4: Cabin Fever All three couples end up spending a weekend at the lake.
